Data Science Fellow position at the Center for Biomedical Informatics Research at Stanford University

We are recruiting a data science fellow to support our research toward uncovering patterns of practice and enabling data-driven decision making in medicine and health care. Our research group is part the Center for Biomedical Informatics Research at Stanford and the National Center for Biomedical Ontology. The successful candidate will develop tools that support the creation and analysis of network models originating from structured and unstructured datasets extracted from clinical data warehouses. Your work will improve upon the existing clinical text annotation workflows developed at Stanford, provide a framework for computing and leveraging statistical measures such as co-frequency metrics at a large-scale, and inform ongoing research in a variety of real-world care settings. This exciting work will be guided by multidisciplinary collaborations with doctors at Stanford Hospital and ontology experts at the National Center for Biomedical Ontology.

The ideal candidate will have an MS or Ph.D. with a strong background in computer science or informatics. Prior experience with the manipulation of large datasets (>1TB) is expected. Strong problem-solving skills, creative thinking, attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to build robust software tools as needed are required. Must have good communication skills and be fluent in both spoken and written English. Prior experience in mining biomedical or clinical databases, ontology-based analyses, text-mining, knowledge representation, or parallel computing platforms is desirable. Minimum technical proficiencies should include programming in Python, Java, R, C/C++; Unix shell scripting; and database management.
